Why is learning this important?
Participating in a reading and writing community nurtures a deep appreciation for literature while helping us learn about the world around us. By engaging in reading and writing together, we discover new ideas, share our thoughts, and build critical thinking and communication skills.
This unit does not focus on practising a specific reading or writing strategy. Instead, it aims to establish reading and writing habits and routines that you can use in school and beyond, helping you become active, confident readers and writers.
This knowledge is not only important for the present but will also open doors in the future, allowing you to connect with people and explore new opportunities.
In this unit we will:
Establish what is a reading and writing community and explore how our classroom can function as a ‘reading and writing community’
Cultivate reading habits by setting reading goals, choosing ‘just right’ books and having book talks
Cultivating writing habits by understanding the reasons behind why we write
